Recovery and Growth in the Face of Painful, Disempowering Circumstances
Jun 11 2021
3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
This workshop will explore the roles of resiliency and growth through the lens of the “Post Traumatic Growth” theory (Calhoun & Tedeschi). Post traumatic growth (PTG) will be defined, discussed, and applied to the Black experience in light or racialized trauma. Growth as a response to trauma will be the focus of this workshop. Concepts will be examined through discussion, reflection, and interaction. Topics will include a emphasis on the impact of exposure to racism in daily interactions and the negative impact this has on the health and wellness of Black people. Workshop members will have the opportunity to examine their own experiences of discrimination due to racism and discover growth patterns considering challenges faced. Suggestion and improved coping skills will be taught to increase the likelihood of growth when experiencing racial trauma.
